Covid-19 and hair loss
Hair loss following Covid-19 infection is common; but don’t panic it is temporary. This is actually hair shedding not hair loss. This temporary hair shedding is called Telogen Effluvium. In fact this is resulted from an extreme stress, both physical (e.g COVID-19 infection) and emotional (e.g living through a pandemic like COVID-19. Basically what happens is when a human is exposed to a significant stress, it can cause hair to go in a resting phase. Because body wants to focus on vital organs in these situations. Hair growth is not necessarily a survival function. Normally 5% of our hair are in shedding phase but under stressful circumstances this percentage may increase to 15% or more and the result is sudden hair shedding. Other causes of telogen effluvium include weight loss, surgery, trauma, medications, iron deficiency and thyroid diseases.
BUT the good news is your hair will grow back and usually resolves within 6 months.
What is the treatment of this hair loss?
-Management of stressful event
-Good nutrition & sleep
-Multivitamin & zinc supplements
Sometimes you may need mesotherapy, PRP or hair fillers to stimulate regrowth of hair. But if your hair loss continues, make appointment to a dermatologist for further investigations and interventions.
